Islamabad – The barring of the SIM cards of half a million tax evaders by Telcom firms has caused a halt to the crackdown against tax evaders.
The nation’s highest tax collection body, FBR, issued directives to disable SIM cards, but the extensive procedure ran into technological issues.
The government intends to pursue legal action in this regard against any telecom provider or other business impeding the process of deactivating SIM cards for mobile phones.

This choice was taken when Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb visited the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) headquarters. The FBR informed him about the plan to deactivate the SIM cards of over half a million non-filers.
Because of pressure from telecom operators, the government bemoaned PTA lack of cooperation, and FBR is working on a way to unlock the SIMs of people who file their returns.
In areas where it has a solid legal foundation, the government is seeking a legal path for the early recovery of Rs2.7 trillion in overpaid taxes.
