There is no official announcement regarding removing Tax on all smartphones in Pakistan. Before the new announcement of PTA Tax, previous notification regards tax will remain on all smartphones.
According to the FBR report in 2023, PTA duty will be charged direct 25,000 Pakistani Rupees on each mobile device if the import mobile price is US$ 100 to US$200.
Pakistani local manufacturing plants produce 6.07 million mobile sets this year, including 4.77 million 2G mobile and 1.3 million smartphones. According to PTA Data, 44 percent of mobile are on 2G networks, and 56 percent of mobile are smartphones.
Despite challenging economic conditions, Pakistan imports Rs93 billion in mobile phones in the first seven months of 2022-2023 (July-January).
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a significant import decline in the first seven months of the current year.
In the same period in 2022, imports fell by 57%, amounting to Rs217 billion.
In the first seven months of this year, 67% drop in imports, totaling $414.80 million, compared to $1.27 billion in the same period of the previous year, 2022.
The restriction set by the government last year in 2022 may impact mobile phone imports. That was not good news.
The current government, in May 2022, set a complete ban on the import of luxury and non-essential items to support the balance of payment.
The import of mobile phone devices during January 2023 was at $52 million despite restrictions given by Government. The imports in January 2023 are 28 percent lower than in December 2022 and 71 percent in January 2022.
