KP Declares Public Holiday on 1st Muharram

Peshawar – Muslims are eagerly anticipating the new Islamic year 1446. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has declared a public holiday to celebrate the start of the new Hijri year.

A notification from the Chief Secretary confirmed that the holiday on the first of Muharram will be observed based on the moon sighting.

Updates on Muharram Moon Sightings in 2024

On July 6, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet to sight the crescent of the new year. Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir will then publicly announce the start of the Islamic calendar.

The Ruet Hilal Committee will formally declare the beginning of the new Islamic year, and zonal committee meetings will take place at their respective offices.

Federal and provincial officials put in place extra security measures ahead of Muharram to keep the peace throughout the first month because of processions.
