Notably, for the first time ever, the manufacturer of the iPhone finished the year as the top phone vendor, overtaking Samsung in yearly sales. Shipments of smartphones reached 320 million in Q4 2023, an increase of 8% over Q4 2022.
After seven consecutive quarters of decrease in the smartphone market, Q4 2023 experienced positive growth, signalling a dramatic turning point. Canalys predicted that 1.1 billion smartphones would be shipped in 2023, a 4% drop from 2022’s numbers.
With a strong 24% share of total shipments in the fourth quarter of 2023, Apple proved to be the clear leader in the smartphone market as top phone maker. The great demand for the iPhone 15 series was largely responsible for this accomplishment. Samsung, on the other hand, with its 17% market share, had to settle for second place and saw a decline in its presence in the low-end market.
Xiaomi secured the third position with a share of 13%, while transition maintained its upward trend, securing a 9% share to emerge as the fourth largest manufacturer of smartphones. Vivo completed the top five rankings with a 7% market share.
Looking ahead, Canalys predicts that major competitors will be vying for a bigger piece of the market demand, with a major focus on on-device AI in high-end devices that launch in 2024.
