NBCC Condemns International Student Work Permit Cuts: Calls the Move ‘Ridiculous’

Particularly in New Brunswick new federal laws regarding overseas student’s post-graduation employment permits are creating significant problems. The president and chief executive officer of New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Mary Butler, expressed her surprise at the recent actions that limit work permits based on national shortage lists.

Outrage over Work Permit Restrictions at the Federal Level:

The government modifications from last week include a new conditional postgraduate work permit for overseas students which was expected by the leadership of NBCC. These temporary work permits for graduates in Canada will now be associated with professions where there is a sustained national shortage.

Foreign Students: A Crucial Part of NBCC:

All things considered NBCC is largely dependent on foreign students in the previous year the percentage of foreign students reached 36%. The government’s overall work permit regime rules were Butler’s main concern because they may inhibit local labor markets if the need for workers did not match the national shortfall.

Workers in New Brunswick Face a Strained Career:

Rather than that, Butler, one of the labor interest advocates emphasized the shifts in the intensity of labor requirements in the province for the production of concrete. Of the 25,000 construction workers in the province in 2019, 27% were located in the southeast and just 10.4% in the northeast.

CCNB is Similarly Concerned, Concentrating on Threats Like:

Butler’s concerns were also expressed by Cyrille Simard, Director of Development at Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB). He emphasized that over half of their students are international and that connecting work permits to the country’s labor scarcity might negatively impact both domestic and international students who depend on certain programs being sustained. As a result many CCNB programs with high ISE ratios run the risk of closing if enrolment declines which would negatively impact local students.

What Does the Future Hold for Foreign Students?

The federal government is required to provide further details regarding the occupations that will be covered by the new work permit criteria. These jobs will be based on the same long-term, in-demand skill categories as the federal Express Entry which include jobs in trades, healthcare, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) and agriculture.
